Dr. Stephanie Villaire, a recently appointed postdoctoral research associate at the Institute of Behavioral Research (IBR), is the lead author of a new article published in Health & Justice. The study offers a qualitative examination of the barriers and facilitators to HIV prevention and treatment for people involved with the criminal justice system.
Drawing on the experiences of justice-impacted individuals and service providers, the study highlights structural and systemic challenges that limit access to care—such as stigma, siloed services, and inconsistent support during reentry. The authors also identify key opportunities to improve engagement and health outcomes, including peer support, culturally responsive care, and cross-sector collaboration.
Dr. Villaire earned her Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from TCU this past spring and now continues her research with the IBR.
